Click to listen to this page using ReadPlease Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre is now more energy efficient with the installation of all new Philips ALTO II energy savings lamps throughout the facility.

The introduction of these 25 watt energy advantage fluorescent T8 lamps will help reduce energy consumption by as much as 40%.

The energy payback is enormous for TBRHSC, with the bulb replacement costs producing an energy savings payback in just 3.8 months and a total savings to the hospital over the life of the lamps of $204,000.

But, energy saving is only the beginning. The new lamps represent an environmentally "greener" choice by containing an industry low 1.7 milligrams of mercury vs. other old technology lamps that contain 3.75 milligrams per lamp. Philips also uses only recycled mercury in these new generation lamps, meaning no new mercury will be introduced into the environment.

Philips has set the industry standard by developing an innovative new way to lower mercury levels without sacrificing life or any other performance.

The new lamps were supplied by MGM Electric of Thunder Bay, who will be involved in recycling of the old lamps that were removed during the upgrade.

The switch will help prevent up to 64,470 pounds of CO2 gas and reduce mercury content by 25,500 Milligrams from entering the environment during electricity generation, in comparison to standard fluorescent lighting.

Purchasing the longest life lamps (30,000 hrs.) will also result in reduced maintenance costs for the TBRHSC.
