Early mobilization for acute stroke and acquired brain injury patients helps reduce frustration and improve their socialization with family and caregivers. Thanks to a Volunteer Association/Health Sciences Foundation Family CARE grant, the Rehabilitation Stroke Team has two new specialized wheelchairs that support these clients more comfortably and safely, and help promote quicker progress getting into and out of bed independently.
The Linda Buchan Centre for Breast Screening and Assessment at our Hospital is designed to streamline the testing process for breast cancer so that patients receive a timely diagnosis. Patients who have had a breast cancer screening mammogram through the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) may be referred for follow-up at the Linda Buchan Centre if they have an abnormal mammogram result. Patients may also be referred by their health care provider for a mammogram and other tests. Based on the referral form provided, the Linda Buchan Centre is authorized to provide additional imaging as required.
It is important to note that a referral to the Linda Buchan Centre does not necessarily mean that an individual has breast cancer.
There are many different testing procedures available depending on your particular circumstances. The team at the Linda Buchan Centre will plan all tests and book appointments, and explain each test to you. Patient navigators are also available to provide support and information, and answer any questions throughout the testing process.
Linda Buchan was a strong advocate in the fight against breast cancer. She was a Northern Cancer Research Foundation (NCRF) board member and the founder of the Bearskin Airline Hope Classic. In celebration of Linda’s life and achievements, the Breast Screening and Assessment Centre at our Hospital was named in her honour.
The Linda Buchan Centre team includes patient navigators, mammography and ultrasound technologists, radiologists, and administrative staff. This team works closely with oncologists, breast surgeons, family physicians, and nurse practitioners to support patients who are having follow-up testing.
The Linda Buchan Centre offers digital mammography, breast ultrasound, and image-guided breast biopsies, as well as patient support and education. These services enable early detection and accurate diagnosis.
